I know the Olympics are still on-going but it’s worth noting, and I’m sure this has crossed the mind of the athletes currently in Beijing, that it’s just under four years until the next Olympics.
The cycle of training and racing never stops no matter what level people are competing at. Judging by the noticable increase in people in gyms and jogging round parks the Beijing games has captured the imagination (or indeed sparked a lot of guilt). Whatever the reason the bandwagon is rolling. For some it will end with a healthier body, for others the journey will stretch all the way to the finish line at London 1,460 day from now.
You can check out the increase in interest shown by Google’s search data for Running Clubs and Athletics Clubs. I’m sure sailing clubs and cycle shops will be experiencing an increase in enquiries.
Sweatshop is an award winning running equipment shop. It was set up by Olympic gold medalist Chris Brasher, co-founder of the London Marathon and one of Sir Roger Bannister’s pace-setters when he broke the 4 minute mile. They supply everything from high end chronograph/heart monitors, sports clothes, running spikes right through to water bottles and sports drinks. They’ve just had to upgrade their site to better meet demand.
All this has got to be a good thing…Get running, jumping, swimming, cycling, pumping iron : Whatever challenge you set yourself, there’s plenty of room on the bandgwagon, get onboard.
But for now we can just salute each and every one of our Olympians who’ve made us so proud over the last few weeks.
